Dashwood Marlborough Pinot Gris 2017 (sc) Light gold in colour with invitingly fragrant pear drop and honey dew melon aromas and full and textural in the off dry palate with power and juiciness to the pear, stonefruit and nashi fruit with a touch of creaming soda flavour coming through on the bright zingy finish. Champion Pinot Gris at both NZIWS and New World Wine Awards. 13% alc. $9.99. 18Oct2017.
Fifth Bridge Central Otago Pinot Gris 2017 (sc) Beautifully aromatic with a bright apple and citrus blossom scent and a very appealing off dry to medium taste that’s textural and lightly viscous. A delicate spiciness mingles into the apricot, custard apple and honey poached pear flavours and there’s a sense of spritz to the finish. A touch of late harvest Riesling adds an x-factor to the enticing taste. Impressive. 13.5% alc. $19.99. 2May2018.
Mount Difficulty Roaring Meg Central Otago Pinot Gris 2017 (sc) Light gold in colour with a bright stewed apple and pear aroma, and poached spiced pear in the textural palate with a whisper of viper’s bugloss honey. It's off dry heading toward medium in sweetness level with refreshing acidity and loads of flavour. 14% alc. $18.99. 10Jan2018.
Mount Riley Marlborough Pinot Gris 2017 This straw gold wine offers delicate floral poached pear aromas and powerful mouth-coating ripe juicy pear / pear drop flavours with touches of ginger and a hint of spearmint leaf confectionary emerging on the lingering finish. Rapaura Springs Reserve Marlborough Pinot Gris 2017 (sc) Bright and tropical fruity with a light tingle of spritz, hints of musk and Turkish delight. An off-dry to medium style that hits the sweet spot with fleshy stonefruit and a brightness to the attractive finish. Ripe, lush and immediately likeable. 13% alc. $14.99. 9May2018.
Saddleback Central Otago Pinot Gris 2017 (sc) This is a soft and fairly dry pinot gris with a lightly aromatic pear and apple skin scent and flavours of poached quince and peach with a hint of ginger adding a spicy vibe to the zingy finish. Tohu Nelson Pinot Gris 2017 (sc) This golden beauty has a savoury nuance to the scent with hints of melon and bottled peach and it’s smooth flowing with a nutty apricot richness and a warm, lifted, slight peppery note to the tropical fruit finish. Amisfield Central Otago Pinot Gris 2016 (sc) There's fruit sweetness to the scent of this oily looking wine with hints of baked apple and pear. Off dry in the palate with abundant apple and vanilla poached pear flavours balanced by a pleasing earthy savouriness. The 30% barrel ferment imparts richness to the mouthfeel and the finish is long and compounding with a bright citrus zing. 13% alc. $28.99. 1Feb2017.
Aronui Single Vineyard Nelson Pinot Gris 2016 (sc) Pale straw. Pear drops, green grapes and honeysuckle on the nose. Spicy and zesty in the palate that’s full of juicy apples, Nashi pear, spices and musk with a refreshing spritzy feel to the texture. Made in an off dry style with the sliver of sweetness balanced by refreshing citrus acidity. 13.5% alc. $16.99. 12Oct2016.
Ceres Swansong Central Otago Pinot Gris 2016 (sc) Served lightly chilled which gives a sense of coolness, this has a classic poached pear and apple strudel scent and it tastes fairly dry and crisp with a savoury, slightly mushroomy note, a zingy apple brightness and an attractive rose petal nuance on the lingering finish. A gris with palate weight and texture, it’s made from a vineyard ‘field blend’ where every 10th vine is Gewurztraminer. 14% alc.$19.99. 2May2018.
Church Road McDonald Series Hawkes Bay Pinot Gris 2016 (sc) There’s a touch of copper to the golden colour. The bouquet is all pears poached in honey and spice and the taste is full and luscious with a mouth-coating texture. It’s a sweeter style (than the norm) with a tingle of ginger and white pepper, a touch of beeswax and loads of fleshy baked apple and pear flavours. 14.5% alc. $19.99. 21Jun2017.
Crafters Union Hawkes Bay Pinot Gris 2016 (sc) The subtle yet fruity bouquet is evocative of stonefruit and vanilla poached pear and the taste is fresh and crisp with upfront crunchy apple and quince becoming softer and textural mid palate with a nutty savouriness, a zing of aromatic spices and tropical fruit brightening up the lingering finish. It seems to me just off dry and with its attractive packaging it is an all round crowd pleaser. 13% alc. $17.99. 22Mar2017.
Greystone Sand Dollar Waipara Pinot Gris 2016 (sc) Scents of poached pear and peach crumble radiate from the glass and it’s cool and fresh in the steely palate that slowly reveals its textural complexity with touches of tarragon and spice lingering. Technically dry (just 3 g/l residual sugar) with a wild yeast, barrel component, it recently came 3rd in Decanter’s World’s best Pinot Gris buys. 13.5% alc. $22.99. 9May2018.
Hunters Marlborough Pinot Gris 2016 (sc) Light gold in hue. The bouquet and taste simply oozes juicy tropical fruit salad brightness. A full an textural wine with a delicate touch of spice, a well balanced touch of zest and youthful pink bubblegum esters. First we have tasted from the brand new vintage and it is fresh as a daisy. Better still, it can be chilled to the bones. 14.5% alc. $15.99. 13Jul2016.
Lawson's Dry Hills Marlborough Pinot Gris 2016 (sc) This is a richer, fuller, just off dry style of pinot gris with an alluring bouquet of tropical fruit and bright fruit flavours of vanilla poached pear, quince, stonefruit and honey. A small portion of the blend was barrel fermented with wild yeasts which adds to the textural complexity. 14.5% alc. $19.99. 22Feb2017.
Peregrine Central Otago Pinot Gris 2016 (sc) Straw gold in hue, a concentrated pear drop bouquet with a shimmy of spice and just off dry to the taste with true-to-variety pear and quince flavours infused with fresh apple acidity and richness to the long creamy finish. Rapaura Springs Reserve Marlborough Pinot Gris 2016 (sc) A little shy on the nose but classically pinot gris with medium sweetness to the palate honed by a touch of grapefruit and lemon zest. It's a fairly dry style with juicy peach and nectarine flavours, a tickle of white pepper, underlying flintiness and a long, soft, mouthfilling and satisfying finish. Roaring Meg Central Otago Pinot Gris 2016 (sc) Light gold in hue with a medley of apple on the nose – heritage apple, slightly stewed apple, lemon and apple – and an attractive delicate floral blossomy note wafting through. Flinty, steely and crisp in the palate with apple and Nashi pear and a zing of aromatic spice on the lingering finish that is softened with a touch of honey. Full of appeal. Theory & Practice Hawkes Bay Pinot Gris 2016 (sc) The bouquet is concentrated with delicate nuances of pear drops, musk and violet sugar dust. Fruity and juicy in the palate with a savoury vinous complexity underpinning the quince and poached pear flavours with hints of peach, mandarin and lime and violets emerging again as the intriguing and delicious flavours linger. It seems to be a very appealing just off dry. 13.5% alc. $17.99. 19Oct2016.
Tiki Estate Waipara Pinot Gris 2016 (sc) Straw gold with honey, spice and orange blossom aromas – a touch of botrytis I sense that comes through in the beautifully balanced palate with honey and spice and pear drop flavours and fresh apple brightness to the finish. With its lusciousness and texture it will be universally appealing. Very popular on the night. Gold Medal NZIWS. 13.5% alc. $14.99. 17Jan2018.
Tohu Marlborough Pinot Gris 2016 (sc) There's an attractive honey poached pear and apple vibe both to the bouquet and flavour that's has a smooth front and mid-palate flow with the moderately dry finish jazzed up with by freshness of citrus and a touch of ginger. Two Rivers 'Brookby Hill' Marlborough Pinot Gris 2016 (sc) The bouquet is crammed with green apple scents and the flavours, with Granny Smith to the fore, echo this suggestion. It’s crisp and dry with loads of fresh acidity and although there is 10% barrel ferment the old barrels used impart texture not taste. Gold NZIWS. 13% alc. $18.99. 11Jan2017.
Waipara Hills Waipara Valley Pinot Gris 2016 (sc) Full of juicy apple and poached pear both on the bouquet and in the palate, this light hued wine has terrific concentration and texture with subtle savoury notes and spicy vibes to the mouthfilling off dry finish. Gutsy and flavoursome. 13.5% alc. $13.99. 8Mar2017.
Waipara Hills Waipara Valley Pinot Gris 2016 (sc) Pale in hue with aromas of Nashi pear, poached pear, lifted floral nuances and hints of strudel spices. Mouth-filling concentrated and just off dry with a spicy vibrancy, touches of preserved lemon rind, juicy apple and a warm finish with a slight toffee yumminess like you get on apple strudel crust. 13.5% alc. $13.99. 5Oct2016.2015 Vintage [top] [index]
Aronui Single Vineyard Nelson Pinot Gris 2015 (sc) Straw gold in colour with a delicately fragrant honeyed pear bouquet, this tastes immediately spicy and zesty with a lovely crisp freshness to balance the juicy poached pear fruit with ginger, lemon and honey flavours coming through. There's more residual sugar than the Roaring Meg, but the balance here is impeccable and the acidity balances the sweet fruit excellently with a beautifully rounded mouthfeel as the flavours linger. 13.5% alc. $15.99. 2Sep2015.
Brancott Box Letter Series F Marlborough Pinot Gris 2015 (sc) Light glossy gold. Beautifully fragrant concentrated bouquet of vanilla poached pear with tangelo zest. Quite rich and heady actually. Full-bodied, concentrated and creamy in the palate - texturally sublime with appealing flavours of poached pears and lime with a touch of tropical fruit on the finish and a tingle of spice. Brightwater Vineyards Nelson Pinot Gris 2015 (sc) Beautifully perfumed and refreshing, this is tangy and juicy with oodles of juicy pear and peach fruit salad and perhaps heritage apples. A flinty undercurrent and a touch of salinity add crispness but the juiciness is just a delight. There’s also a touch of spice and a subtle nuance of lychee in this off dry to medium style – the vinous sweetness fleshing out the finish beautifully while adding concentration and intensity. 13% alc. $19.99. 18Nov2015.
Church Road McDonald Series Hawkes Bay Pinot Gris 2015 (sc) Moderate gold in hue with a bouquet of apples both fresh with skin on and honey-baked. Honey is also the star performer in the palate that's sweet and viscous in texture. It's gorgeously opulent and mimics the rich pinot gris styles from Alsace. Wild ferment and maturation in French oak, plus the heady alcohol, adds to the wine's complexity and rounds out the acidity with baked apples and spice coming through again on the aftertaste. Decadent and unctuous. 14.5% alc. $19.99. 3Feb2016.
Domain Road 'Defiance' Central Otago Pinot Gris 2015 (sc) OMG, the nose is amazing – it’s soft, creamy and aromatic with a subtle nuance of tarragon and pineapple sage – very inviting indeed. Love the nose, so aromatic and fragrant. Served well chilled this it quite crisp in the mouth yet soft in a way with an unctuous texture and flavours of vanilla poach pear with a touch of sherbet and honeydew melon. Seems to be just off dry and the bright yet creamy finish is superbly fruity and long. Delicious wine and perfect with the BBQ pork - but also quite dreamy with a solo slice of camembert cheese. 13.5% alc. $0.00. 19Dec2015.
Esk Valley Hawkes Bay Pinot Gris 2015 (sc) Straw gold. Radiating scents of poached pear, this has a lovely soft oily texture with nectar-like flow, a fruit medley of melon, peach and pear and a touch of ginger on the long honeyed finish. Partial oak fermentation adds a savoury complexity. 13% alc. NZIWS Gold Medal tasting. 10Sep2015.
Framingham Marlborough Pinot Gris 2015 (sc) Light yellow gold. Honey and custard fill the generous bouquet of this decadent sweeter style that’s full of honey and nectar poached pear with musky notes, hints of orange water and five-spice and an exciting touch of citrus that balances the sweetness so beautifully. Warm, rich mouthfeel and lingering flavours of honey, five spice, poached pear and juicy peach. 13.5% alc. NZIWS Gold Medal tasting. 10Sep2015.
Greystone Waipara Pinot Gris 2015 (sc) Light gold. Initially shy on the nose (especially after SB) but opens up nicely to reveal vanilla and spice poached apples and pear. In the palate the fruit echoes the bouquet with honey and spice layers and a touch of viscosity adding richness to the texture. It's off dry in sweetness level and slips down very easily. Partially wild fermented with 10 g/l residual sugar, it's quite rich on its own – I think it needs food. Elite Gold AirNZ 2015. 13.5% alc. $19.99. 10Feb2016.
Johanneshof Marlborough Pinot Gris 2015 (sc) Pale gold. I get pears, quince and toasted spices on the nose of this exciting off dry to medium style that oozes lusciousness yet has a crisp apple note that gives the wine a momentary impression of being much drier. It’s all honey poached pears, juicy peach, crystallised ginger and quince with a luxurious mouthfeel and a long, warm finish. 12.5% alc. NZIWS Gold Medal tasting. 10Sep2015.
Johner Wairarapa Pinot Gris 2015 (sc) Lemon gold. Apple on the nose and full of apple and quince flavours with an intriguing leesy richness and a touch of tarragon and sage – it really is all apple, apple and apple – juicy green apple joins baked apple, apple juice and apple skin with a zing of spice on the juicy finish. Lawson Dry Hills Marlborough Pinot Gris 2015 (sc) A straw-hued wine with a brilliantly radiant and concentrated bouquet of pear drops and spiced baked apples that echo in the deliciously juicy palate where the orchard fruit is joined by tropical guava and musky spices. Served chilled on the night it presents as off dry with loads of flavour and texture. A very tasty, approachable and versatile white that could possibly convert non-PG drinkers. 14% alc. $19.99. 27Jan2016.
Lawson’s Dry Hills 'The Pioneer' Marlborough Pinot Gris 2012 (sc) Light gold. The bouquet is full of biscuit spices with poached pear and honey. It's heady and powerful with a lusciousness to the texture. Honey-baked and judiciously spiced orchard fruit flavours are delicate and restrained. Partial barrel ferment adds a complexity and mouthfeel that makes it stand apart from the more fruity styles. Very Alsatian in a way. 14.5% alc. $29.99. 2Mar2016.Light glossy gold hued with a hint of lychee, honey and citrus peel wafting from the glass – also a bit of VA. Flavoursome and concentrated in the palate with a soft, almost oily texture, poached pear and tropical fruit, a tickle of spice and a lingering suggestion of honey and musk. Just off dry with alcohol adding to the weight and richness, it emulates Alsace and is almost verging on luscious. 14% alc. $29.99. 15Feb2017.
This lustrous light gold wine has honeyed poached pear aromatics that are delicate and enchanting. A sweeter, lightly viscous style with a nod to Alsace, it flows beautifully across the palate and teases with it’s powerful and almost gewurztraminer-like flavours that hint of violets and ginger infused spices. Mills Reef Estate Hawkes Bay Pinot Gris 2015 (sc) Moderate gold. Appealing bouquet - floral and delicately fruity with a sherbet confectionary aroma come to mind. Smooth on first tasting with a lovely fresh zing, it's off dry to medium and very pleasant with the seafood. 12.5% alc. $18.00. 24Jan2016.
Mills Reef Reserve Hawkes Bay Pinot Gris 2015 (sc) Light gold. Concentrated vanilla-infused tropical fruit bouquet, a suggestion of marzipan maybe. A sweeter style with nectarine and dried tropical fruit, then acidity coming forth to balance out the initial sweetness and a touch of honey to the finish. Easy summer sipping. % alc. $24.95. 21Nov2015.
Petane Station Hawkes Bay Pinot Gris 2015 (sc) It smells and tastes of passionfruit and tropical fruit and the texture is so smooth, so creamy, with lashings of apricot nectar and stonefruit, hints of ginger, ethereal-like creamed macadamia nut delightfulness and a mouthwatering citrus and freeze-dried pineapple zing. Very delicious with a wonderfully persistent finish, this is outstanding pinot gris and very deserving of its many gold medals. 14% alc. $23.99. 23Nov2016.
Sacred Hill Marlborough Pinot Gris 2015 (sc) Light citrine — glossy in the winter evening incandescent light. Great nose - all honey poached quince with a delicate sprinkling of spice then apple and ginger and again honey — offers up heaps. A full-bodied pinot gris (no doubt the 14% abv attributes to this) with soft acidity, a touch of flower musk, hints of vanilla and honey in the background. Fruit is vanilla poached pears and white melon and the zing of spice adds brightness to the finish where I detect a delightful touch of anise / fennel seed. Heady wine, must be good cos I’ve written lots. But is it a heavy wine and does need food. 14% alc. $20. 16Jun2016.
Saddleback Central Otago Pinot Gris 2015 (sc) Straw gold with a classic pear drop bouquet and bright and fruity in the palate with baked apple, poached pear, strudel spices and ginger. Just of on the cusp of off dry with a lightly viscous texture, this blend of Bendigo, Pisa and Gibbston Valley fruit is young and fresh, great to serve chilled in the afternoon / early evening. 13.5% alc. $18.99. 17Feb2016.
Sea Level Home Block Nelson Pinot Gris 2015 (sc) A straw gold wine with a concentrated bouquet of musky spices infusing stone fruit, pear drops and quince. The concentration continues into the juicy and flavoursome palate that's just off dry in sweetness level and echoes the traits on the nose with a zing of citrus and ginger, and the aftertaste lingers deliciously. 13% alc. $15.99. 3Feb2016.
Soho Jagger Marlborough Pinot Gris 2015 (sc) Pale straw. Poached pear and vanilla pod fill the tantalising bouquet and it is refreshingly crisp and dry in the palate with crunchy pear and apple with a touch of mandarin then a floral honeysuckle allure to the spicy finish that lingers with a creamy mouthfeel. Starborough Marlborough Pinot Gris 2015 (sc) Light gold. Concentrated heady bouquet of honeysuckle and aromatic spices. Soft and rounded in the palate with a savoury complexity from partial oak aging, the fruit is soft and ripe and reminiscent of juicy pears in juice with more edgy quince and a touch of spice. Terrifically juicy, full, rich, ripe and complex with a warm finish. 13.5% alc. NZIWS Gold Medal tasting. 10Sep2015.
te Pa Marlborough Pinot Gris 2015 (sc) Light ‘white gold’ in hue. There’s a vanilla pod creaminess to the peach and orchard fruit bouquet and the mouthfeel is soft and generous with a spicy brightness to the abundant fruit flavours of poached pear, custard apple and mandarin with an exotic spiciness and hints of tarragon. Deliciously juicy, rounded, mouthfilling and intense and the ultra long finish really zings. NZIWS Gold. 14% alc. $16.99. 30Sep2015.
Tohu Awatere Valley Marlborough Pinot Gris 2015 (sc) Clean, fresh, juicy and bright with a tempting honeysuckle allure to the bouquet and a very satisfying orchard fruit texture. A beautifully balanced mouthful of stonefruit, tropical fruit and poached pear with just a lovely seam of zest, it’s on the cusp of off dry. Had with the cousins and it went down a treat. 13% alc. $21.95. 5Mar2016.
Villa Maria Cellar Selection Marlborough Pinot Gris 2015 (sc) Light gold. There’s a savoury complexity to the yellow fruit scent and the palate is full, rich, ripe and creamy with flavours of juicy apples, quince and pears with a spicy flourish and a zing of citrus. Full-bodied and textural with a honeysuckle overlay to the just off dry finish. 14% alc. NZIWS Gold Medal tasting. 10Sep2015.
Villa Maria Private Bin East Coast Pinot Gris 2015 (sc) Light gold. Delicately fragrant with a tantalising floral allure. Soft and creamy with vanilla poached pear and spice, a flinty mid palate and a savoury note to the finish. Juicy, soft and just off dry with pear and a zing of apple, and very good mouthfilling length. 13% alc. NZIWS Gold Medal tasting. 10Sep2015.
Waimea Nelson Pinot Gris 2015 (sc) Light gold with concentrated poached pear and yellow plum aromas accented with strudel spices. Soft and creamy in the palate with a harmonious mouthfeel, delicate peach and pear fruit, a squish of lime and some lovely summer herb notes to add a little savouriness. Just off dry, which makes it universally appealing, it's crisp, fresh and juicy fruit sweet with a touch of passionfruit emerging on the finish. 13.5% alc. $17.00. 21Nov2015.
Wairau River Marlborough Pinot Gris 2015 (sc) This is leap out of the glass fragrant with citrus blossom, poached pears and stone fruit. Crisp, fresh, dry and spicy with a zesty vibrancy, it's crammed full of quince and tropical fruit with hints of pineapple in the background. There's a well-balanced savoury complexity from the winemaking process where a portion of the blend was wild yeast fermented in oak. Long and dry with a fleshy fruit nectar richness - a delightful wine with seafood or pork cooked on the BBQ. 13.5% alc. $20.00. 28Nov2015.2014 Vintage [top] [index]
12,000 Miles Gladstone Pinot Gris 2014 (sc) Clear light lemon gold. Delicate spiced pear aroma embossed with sweet citrus butter notes – the bouquet is clean, fresh, fragrant and pretty. There an exuberant spicy touch h to the flavour – orange zest and ginger with underlying quince and poached pear and a creaminess to the texture, and a well balanced herbaceous zing to the finish Soft and fresh with a pleasing savoury notes creeping in. A tasty off dry wine that shone in the tasting. Awesome with Rowan Bishop’s Asian Baked Salmon from Urban & Country August 2015. 13.5% alc. $21.00. 12Aug2015.
Ara Single Estate Marlborough Pinot Gris 2014 (sc) There’s a delicate tinge of pink to the pale straw hue and the bouquet is delicate yet rich with touches of red apple and pear. Stewed apples, strawberry and pear drops are my key descriptors but the taste is a tad too sweet for me, it seems unbalanced so need to try again with more chilling than 15 minutes in the freezer. Blackenbrook Nelson Pinot Gris 2014 (sc) Richly aromatic with Alsace-like nuances of ripe fruit and spices that are reminiscent of those in Gewurztraminer. Full-bodied, ripe and luscious in the palate with a tingling pepper, coriander and ginger spiciness, a luscious creamy texture and juicy ripe pear, peach and melon fruit with an infusion of tangelo/orange blossom. Brightwater Vineyard Nelson Pinot Gris 2014 (sc) At first this seems quite nutty and steely with classical aromas of apples and vanilla poached pears but it’s rich, ripe and creamy to the taste with a lovely spicy infusion and honeysuckle adding lusciousness to the full-bodied finish. Just on the cusp of off-dry, it is very long and delicious with nectarine coming into play. 14% alc. NZIWS Gold Medal Tasting. 11Sep2014.
Coopers Creek New Zealand Pinot Gris 2014 (sc) Brightly hued lemon gold. Lovely ripe and concentrated fruit bouquet of apple and poached pear with a bright zing of zest. Main Divide Waipara Pinot Gris 2014 (sc) The honeydew colour has a soft golden glow. The bouquet is so rich, so heady, so full of nectar and botrytis – like honeyed apricots and citrus preserves. Then in the mouth the texture of the wine is all silk and satin with a soft, rounded flow. A luscious wine, concentrated and rich with botrytis kept in check by a suggestion of lemon balm infusing the predominant flavours of reconstituted freeze-dried pears poached in nectar embellished with sugar and spice and all things nice. Milcrest Estate Nelson Pinot Gris 2014 This lustrous, light gold-hued wine emits a heady bouquet where subtle hints of musk and lychee infuse the aromatic fragrance of spiced apple and poached pear. Richmond Plains Nelson Pinot Gris 2014 (sc) Light gold. Very appealing bouquet of spiced apple and vanilla poached pear with a very subtle hint of white pepper and pineapple sage. Served chilled it is crisp and dry in the palate with a flinty undercurrent and a fine seam of vanilla pod and lemon grass that infuse the predominantly crisp apple and pear fruit with the most delicate hint of ginger flower and Asian spices with orange blossom on the finish. But is seems more of a savoury than a fruity wine mid palate, but then ripe stonefruit emerges as this aromatic wine lingers. As the wine warms up to summer room temperature lots of creamy layers are revealed, it’s gorgeously textural and the finish is like fruit salad. Waimea Nelson Pinot Gris 2014 (sc) Pale yellow gold in the glass with a bouquet that seems quite earthy – discarded apple skins come to mind and a touch of strudel spice emerges too. Textural and soft in the palate with a gentle touch of sweetness and then a tangy citrus zing to the finish. The fruit is sweet and ripe and is reminiscent of apple, custard apple, poached pears and quince with a pleasing ginger and lemon grass zing. Wise Owl Parliament Pinot Gris 2014 (sc) The hue is the colour of a rare yellow diamond; the bouquet is pears, honeysuckle and crystallised violets and the taste delivers on the promise that the nose suggests. It's a textural wine with lovely clean flavours of pears and strudel spices with an exotic citrus touch that's heading towards Kaffir lime. Bilancia Hawkes Bay Pinot Gris 2013 (sc) Chilled for an hour before serving, this is aromatic and distinctly varietal with aromas of poached pear and quince with a savoury, mealy, nutty intrigue and this most subtle hint of flower musk and spice – the spice even more distinctive in the palate, a sweet spiciness that makes me think freshly ground coriander with the warmth and tickle of ginger in behind. Lovely fruit auras of pear, white peach, Pacific Rose apple and a mandarin brightness, it’s lightly viscous in texture and with its smooth flowing mouthfeel it slips down very easily. Quite heady, like Viognier in this respect, it's ripe and while the fruit is sweet, the vine finishes deliciously dry. Devils Staircase Central Otago Pinot Gris 2013 (sc) There's plenty of vibrant lemon/lime freshness in this full textured, concentrated mouthcoating, lightly viscous gris. I very much like the textural complexity, the rich orchard fruit notes, the lifted floral, orange blossom nuances to the finish and the subtle but attractive exotic spice infusion. A lovely rich wine that would stand up to reasonably powerful food flavours. Tasted with pork belly braised in coconut milk and curry spices, the star match was five spice rubbed crisply port crackling. It’s a light yellow gold colour with a delicate exotic spice-infused aroma with a hint of ginger and a suggestion of toffee apple. Full and rich in the palate with a crisp acid spice and a long soft finish with the spicy notes infusing the white fruit flavours of pear, melon, citrus and honeysuckle. Burnt Spur Martinborough Pinot Gris 2012 (sc) There's a nutty warmth to the orchard fruit and citrus scent and the taste is initially quite citrussy and zesty but the acidity drops out quickly leaving a oily rich pear flavour with a touch of pineapple sage. Brancott Estate Letter Series 'F' Marlborough Pinot Gris 2012 (sc) Light gold. Quite savoury on the nose, the result of oak and yeast lees stirring maybe, but still those classically varietal apple and pear aromas coming through. There is a mid palate burst of sweetness but overall this is dry, zesty and zingy with a touch of ginger and those appealing strudel spices. Church Road McDonald Series Hawkes Bay Pinot Gris 2012 (sc) Light yellow gold, with a subtle smoky nuance to the scent and full-bodied with a fat, fleshy, mouthcoating texture, a suggestion of botrytis and musky notes like you get in Gewurztraminer but without the full-on floral intensity of that grape. Gladstone 12,000 Miles Wairarapa Pinot Gris 2012 (sc) Delicate floral perfume redolent of port wine magnolia, some bubblegum esters too. Lashing of fruit nicely supported by a creamy leesy backbone. It has a nicely rounded texture and herbs – tarragon anise flavours come to mind. Light and fresh to the taste - an easy to drink, easy to like, socialising style. Lawson's Dry Hills ‘The Pioneer’ Marlborough Pinot Gris 2012 (sc) Lustrous light yellow gold in hue and an intriguing, slightly smoky aroma that evokes an impression of concentration and lusciousness with a touch of crystallised ginger and peach. It's made in a sweeter style with 22 grams of residual sugar, but 2/3rd of the blend was barrel fermented resulting in layers, texture and additional richness. The flavours remind me of a fruit salad of pears, melons, apples and pineapple with warm aromatic spices. Palliser Martinborough Pinot Gris 2012 (sc) Juicy orchard fruit scents, clean with subtle musk. A light to medium bodied style, it's acid driven at this stage of its life and finishes a little astringent and dry. Reminds me of Granny Smith apples and flint. But it has a certain appeal and was the match of the day to pan-fried salmon but avoid salad greens like rocket and cauliflower puree. 12.5% alc. $28.50. 10May2013.
Richmond Plains Nelson Pinot Gris 2012 (sc) This light gold coloured wine has a very attractive perfume that radiates orchard fruit, peaches and pears most prominently, with an enticing floral note – very pretty. Lifted and spicy to the taste with the peach and pear fruit deliciously ripe, fleshy and juicy and although a dryish style a luscious fruit sweetness shines through. There's a touch of vanilla in the background, a sweet pastry complexity, hints of citrus, exotic spices and musk. Te Mania Nelson Pinot Gris 2012 (sc) This is classically pear – fresh pear, nashi pear, poached pears in vanilla together with the more tart cousin, quince. It's smooth and soft in the palate with the vanilla spice tones adding lusciousness to the concentrated taste and mouthfeel. It seems pretty dry but the finish is 'ripe fruit;' sweet. There's a suggestion of underlying spice with zest and zing that brings it all into harmony. A very pleasing and satisfying drink. Torrent Bay Nelson Pinot Gris 2012 (sc) Lemon gold. Windfall autumn fruit – apple skin – and strudel spices on the nose. Heading towards a medium sweetness in the palate but underlying refreshing acidity brings that sweetness into balance. Urlar Gladstone Pinot Gris 2012 (sc) Quince and poached pear aromas carry through to the palate where initially vanilla notes come to mind. It seems quite poached pear creamy but there is a sprizty mid palate interlude before the softness of the wine re-emerges then once again a contrasting note on the finish which is dry and zesty with a flinty veneer. There’s a light viscosity to the texture, which is mouth-filling and fruit juice fleshy. Tropical fruit on the nose is a little shy but there's also something enticingly exotic - floral - yet earthy and savoury at the same time. A smooth, seamless classy pinot gris. Lawson's Dry Hills Marlborough Pinot Gris 2011 (sc) The tropical fruit aroma that's infused with tangelo zest is tantalisingly appealing and the flavours are juicy and delicious with apples, pears, an infusion of citrus and honeydew melon. There are some a classic Pinot Gris character and a bready richness to the finish that suggests a decent length of time on yeast lees. Matawhero Gisborne Pinot Gris 2011 (sc) Smells ripe and fruity with aromas of peaches and pear, and it tastes incredibly juicy too. All purity of fruit and a slight herbaceousness to form a well-balanced finish infused with a citrussy tartness. A chameleon of a wine too, it keeps changing over the course of the tasting. Maui Waipara Pinot Gris 2011 (sc) Youthful light gold colour, fresh peach and pear aroma with a little touch of tangelo zest. A lovely soft creamy wine like your favourite grandmother's apple pie. Tasted around 17 degrees C, then various stages of cooler temps, I quite like this around 12 degrees C. When it's warmer the alcohol is more noticeable and the texture seems more viscous, there are more mealy characters and the fruit is more peachy. Mills Reef Reserve Hawkes Bay Pinot Gris 2011 (sc) A little subdued on the nose – some oak perhaps in here – the moderate gold colour suggests this too. Full and rich to the taste with tropical fruit, nectar, honeysuckle layers too. A little one-dimensional on its own, I'm thinking this will be a great wine with food. A spicy, spritzy feel too. Momo Marlborough Pinot Gris 2011 (sc) Sweet perfumed with ripe tropical fruit and ginger flower aromas, it smells enticing. and appealing. Quite oily in the palate with a bready warmth and a savoury nuance from the wild yeast fermentation and partial oak aging for 5 months. Ohau Gravels Pinot Gris 2011 (sc) Perfumed, fragrant, heading toward flower musk and spice. Very appealing. The exotics from the perfume carry through to the palate – is there a splash of Gewurztraminer in here? It's musky floral, the fruit is textural and there's an array of exotic fruit flavours. perhaps some botrytis influence. I love it of course. Stands out in the tasting for this reason. But the medium sweet lusciousness of the wine overpowered the food match of pan-fried salmon. 13.5% alc. $24.95. 10May2013.
Olssens 'Tom Logan' Central Otago Pinot Gris 2011 (sc) The delicate bouquet of honeysuckle and citrus blossom belies the full flavoured palate. There's a juicy, zesty, freshness to this off dry wine that's plump with poached pear, layered with honeysuckle and tarragon, and lovely floral nuances on the perfectly poised finish. Palliser Martinborough Pinot Gris 2011 (sc) Fresh citrus and apple bouquet and quite dry and lemon tangy in the palate with a subtle suggestion of salinity and a dry quenching finish with some lovely biting acidity and tarragon notes coming through. Passage Rock Waiheke Island Pinot Gris 2011 (sc) A lovely rich spicy Pinot Gris with a touch of residual sweetness and ripe pear and stonefruit flavours, there's white flowers and ginger and something intriguing - perhaps white pepper. Rockburn Central Otago Pinot Gris 2011 (sc) This has a lovely fruity aroma perfumed with tropical fruit, cherimoya and sweet apple, the fruit suggestions following through to the citrus zest-infused palate. Rockburn Devils Staircase Central Otago Pinot Gris 2011 (sc) There's an exotic nuance to the scent and an earthy richness, then in the palate there's a momentary nuance of grapefruit. In the palate there fleshy tropical fruit, heading towards exotic, with brioche nuances and citrus exciting the finish. Tatty Bogler Otago Pinot Gris 2011 (sc) There a complex a lemon bread nuance to the slightly musky, slightly spice scent and the taste is immediately appealing with its textural complexity and fruit flavours that have a delicacy while evoking suggestions of apple strudel, poached pear and a touch of peach (leaf). There's a delicate vanilla-infused spiciness and the whole package is creamy and complete with the mouthfilling flavours expansive and long. Waimea Nelson Pinot Gris 2011 (sc) It's light yellow gold in colour with a classic varietal aroma of apples and pears. Soft in the palate with a mealy richness, it seems like a wine that has lots going on with poached pear, hints of vanilla, a touch of cinnamon and pastry, then a fresh zing of citrus on the finish that lifts it. West Brook Waimauku Pinot Gris 2011 (sc) When first tasted this is pear drop steely on nose and quite phenolic and spicy in the palate with a little bit of white pepper on the finish and just a touch of sweetness.
