Taylors St Andrews Clare Valley Chardonnay 2008
There's a smoky, flinty nuance to the scent of this moderately full-bodied style. It's warm, nutty and spicy with seamlessly integrated oak and the smooth oily textured flavours have grapefruit keeping the tropical fruit sweetness in check.

Kakapo Marlborough Chardonnay 2011
With a tantalising creamy scent and bright fruit flavours of tropical fruit and melon with well balanced acidity and a biscuity oak finish, this harmonious wine ticks all the drinkability buttons and has an attractive 'arty 'label too. Gold NZIWS.

Ra Nui Marlborough Pinot Gris 2011
There's a flinty character to the scent and zesty butterscotch flavours fill the palate, which has a slight spritziness to the texture. A moderately powerful, off dry style full of poached pear with lemon verbena on the finish. Gold NZIWS.

Schoffit Cuvee Caroline Alsace Pinot Gris 2009
Perfumed with a delicately floral scent, this medium sweet wine has a gorgeous smooth texture and clean pristine flavours of spiced pear with hints of apricot and a warm, mealy, luscious finish.

Reischgraf von Kesselstatt Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett 2006 - Mosel, Germany
The tantalising bouquet of honeysuckle, jasmine and citrus blossoms follows through to the vibrantly fresh juicy, palate with perfectly balanced sweetness, a lusciousness to the texture with a slatey earthiness and a touch of apple nectar on the gently lingering finish. Outstanding!

Maude 'Mt Maude Vineyard' East Block Riesling 2012 – Central Otago
A bouquet of limes, honeysuckle and rose petals introduces this steely young wine that's full of apples, limes and youthful freshness. At first it seems dry and crisp yet has a sweeter impression to the harmonious finish. From Wanaka. 35g/l rs. Gold NZIWS. Gold and Champion Wine at the Aromatic Wine Competition.

Millars Vineyard Mangawhai Syrah 2010
With a deep violet red hue and a black cherry and chocolate scent, this wine is so enticing even before it is tasted. Delicious from the outset, the cherry and chocolate of the bouquet joins concentrated flavours of plum and smooth, creamy vanillin oak with black pepper emerging with a stylish flourish on the finish. It is the black pepper that is the clue that this juicy succulent wine is actually from NZ. Gold NZIWS.

Farnese Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC 2011 - Italy
This deep, earthy, dry, muscular wine is dark in colour with a savoury and black fruit scent, a cedary nuance and firm tannins in the palate. A limited edition bottling and serious drinking for the price.

Church Road McDonald Series Marzemino 2009
Intense black red coloured, with a succulent red fruit bouquet, this powerful wine is ripe and juicy in the palate with slightly furry tannins and masses of red fruit and chocolate. While the fruit is sweet, the harmonious finish is savoury and dry. An Italian grape variety grown in Hawkes Bay. Gold NZIWS.

Thorn Clarke Shotfire Barossa Shiraz 2010 Australia
Saturated black red coloured, the aromas entice with vanillin oak, blackberry and Shiraz spices. It's peppery and spicy in the palate and although the back label describes this opulent number as having black chocolate and plums – I get raisins and black pepper too. This is a very serious, concentrated, savoury style of Shiraz with an earthy depth that is synonymous with old vines.

Mills Reef Elspeth Cabernet Merlot 2009
Dark red with moderate saturation. A little earthy on the nose with cassis perhaps, and smoky cedar – it emanates a true 'Bordeaux varieties' scent. Gentle to start with a spicy freshness, the flavours compound and broaden delightfully. Silky yet impressive in its stature. Savoury and dry - a class act that deserves respect.

Morambro Creek Padthaway Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
Deep in colour with a full rich bouquet and a succulent sweet-fruited palate with ultra-ripe fruit flavours of cassis and currant with mint and spicy oak combining harmoniously and a chocolate layer to the spicy finish. Gold NZIWS.

This pale lemon coloured, delicately floral wine has nutty nuances to the bouquet and light pear and apple flavours with a touch of lime, a suggestion of ginger-like spritz and a steely freshness to the zingy finish. Brilliant value for everyday drinking.

Carrick Unravelled Central Otago Pinot Noir 2010
A deep rich, luxurious, velvety purple-red colour and the bouquet is so tantalising, it's smoky with a deep-seated sensuous savouriness, and the taste is full of those exotic, mulled wine, anise-like spices with red and black cherries, dried herbs, chocolate and a velvety plushness. Fantastic value at the under-$25 price. 5 stars and No, 7 in the Cuisine Top 10.

Fairmont Estate Wairarapa Pinot Noir 2010
A fine-textured black red colour with a ripe red fruit and creamy oak bouquet, this is spicy and savoury tasting with a smooth creamy texture – and the earthy complexity of this wine goes to another level (cf to the Carrick before it). It's succulent, juicy, savoury and gamey and certainly delivers for the price. Gold NZIWS. 2011.

Terra Sancta Central Otago Pinot Noir 2011
An intriguing 'blue-red' colour, the tantalising bouquet offers up smoky oak, juicy red fruit and dried roses. A lovely ripe, juicy wine to the taste with an exotic spiciness, firm silky tannins, beautifully poised savouriness and a mesmerising lingering finish. Full of finesse, it delivers the goods without overpowering. Gold medal NZIWS.

The Mud House Golden Terraces Central Otago Pinot Noir 2010
A dark red with a black hue to the core, there's an intriguing sweetness to the smoky, savoury bouquet and a delicious, juicy, fruity succulence to the taste. It's creamy with a sensuous smoothness, a subtle smokiness, and exciting spiciness and a long-lasting savoury finish. Bendigo fruit. Gold Decanter. 5 stars Winestate.

Kiritea Martinborough Pinot Noir 2011
Dark red black, fine in appearance. Dark fruit – red currants, black cherries and plums infuse into the bitter chocolate bouquet, the chocolate carries through to the deep, dark, savoury, gamey, almost leathery palate. Silver NZIWS.

Gibbston Valley Central Otago Pinot Noir 2011
Dark red with violet tints. Perfumed, floral, spiced cherries and woodsmoke bouquet Lovely spiciness and brightness to the taste with cherry and plum fruit, firmly structured velvety tannins and a long juicy, savoury finish, where the smoky notes emerge again quite evocatively. 5 stars and No, 6 in the Cuisine Top 10.

Grasshopper Rock Central Otago Pinot Noir 2010
A deep pinky-red black, concentrated, intense. Finely honed, sensuous, savoury bouquet with the richness of concentrated spiced cherry fruit. An exciting savoury and exotically spicy taste with dried roses and the crispy outside bits of roast meat, lovely fine tannin structure that makes it so silky and seamless in the palate. A charmer 3 gold medals 5 stars and No. 1 in Cuisine Top 10.

Tatty Bogler Pinot Noir 2010
A wine made from blended Bendigo and Waitaki fruit, this is bigger, richer and dark fruit riper with immediately more noticeable colour and palate weight. It has a sumptuous savoury aroma and juicy black cherry and spiced plum flavours with lovely smoky savoury spicy oak, a touch of chocolate and fine tannins. A succulent wine with power and length. 5 stars and No. 2 in Cuisine Top 10.

Valli Bendigo Pinot Noir 2010
Dark red. Quite a funky, feral, aroma – as only Pinot Noir can get away with – with mulled wine spices too, and so complex and exciting in the fine textured palate. It has all of the funky, gamey, earthy, savoury flavours with dark bittersweet fruit and finely honed oak. 5 stars and No. 4 in the Cuisine Top 10.

Mamre Brook Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
An almost opaque black red, this blockbuster red smells of blackberry fruit, cigar box, vanillin oak, chocolate and cedar, these characters carrying through to the juicy succulent palate where the tannins are smooth and seamless. On the night, absolutely irresistible, even with the price rise. Champion Cabernet NZIWS 2011.

Riverby Single Vineyard Noble Riesling 2011
This smells just delicious! It's a clear, burnished gold colour, with a tantalising bouquet of citrus and honeysuckle and so nectar-sweet to the taste - full of honey and candied pineapple with lovely clean sweet citrus flavours that make it seem so fresh. Gold NZIWS.

Jules Taylor Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2012
Straw gold coloured, vibrant aromas of gooseberry, capsicum and cut grass and crisp, fresh flavours of lime, capsicum and tomato stalk and exotic tropical fruit like kiwano (prickly pear). Very steely, yet there is an oily richness, a hint of lemon honey and a fresh tang to the pungent finish. Gold NZIWS.

Neudorf Moutere Chardonnay 2011 - Nelson
Light golden colour with a smoky oak and concentrated stone fruit bouquet, the rich peach fruit carries through to the harmonious palate with toasty oak and butter caramel to the fore, a rich, mealy complexity and a long smooth finish with just a touch of citrus freshness. Served blind, and lightly chilled, this wine immediately ticks all the easy-to-like, easy-to-drink boxes. Possibly the most forward, most approachable yet.

Marsden Estate Black Rocks Bay of Islands Chardonnay 2011
Light gold with a tantalising butterscotch bouquet, then mealy flavours to the fore in this powerful wine where winemaking complexities dominate, with spicy oak, citrus and tropical fruit coming into play. A bold, mouthfilling wine with a lovely smoky savouriness, richness and length. Gold NZIWS.

Toi Toi Reserve Marlborough Riesling 2011
At first this pale straw coloured wine seems very dry and steely, yet there's a hint of sweetness to make it just off dry. It is so incredibly juicy, tangy and fresh with green grape, lemonade and Granny Smith fruit over a flinty backbone.

Church Road McDonald Series Hawkes Bay Pinot Gris 2011
Apple and pear with a delicate layer of vanilla and strudel spices and hints of flower musk this is a soft wine that becomes richer, more powerful and more luscious as the flavours linger in the mouth, it's made to emulate an Alsatian style, Gold NZIWS.

Saint Clair 'Premium' Marlborough Merlot 2010
This juicy succulent wine is a medium dark red colour and smells earthy and savoury yet also concentrated and fruity. The savouriness carries through to the tasty palate that's full-boded and spicy with concentrated plum and mixed berry jam, a touch of chocolate, hints of liquorice and a long, smooth finish, Silver NZIWS.

Wynns Coonawarra 'The Siding' Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
A dark black red with a concentrated bouquet that hints of hint of vanilla with masses of purple fruit and smoky oak, A young wine with the oak still quite varnishy, it's massively concentrated, brimming with opulent fruit backed up by classic cedar, a subtle hint of mint and cameo cream biscuits. Fine tannins make this a delight to drink Value for money buy.

Pepperjack Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
This dark red coloured, rich, powerful Cabernet oozes creaminess and succulence. While a little herbaceous on the nose this firm-tannined wine is smooth and harmonious in the mouth, the chocolate-covered blueberry and blackcurrant fruit is concentrated and juicy with a touch of spiciness, and the smoky savoury oak brings everything into balance.

Charles Melton Nine Popes GSM 2009 – Barossa
Deep dark red, ultra creamy on the nose, and a myriad of flavours in the palate. The wine is youthful and at this stage the oak is quite forward. Plenty of saw-dusty oak, juicy red and black fruits, mocha, chocolate, allspice, pepper, liquorice and vanilla. With every sip you find something different and exciting and the tannins are plush and mouthcoating – they take this wine to another level – and the finish is juicy and long. All French oak, 25% new.

Chapel Hill McLaren Vale Shiraz 2009
Inky black red with a deep aroma of smoky savoury oak, cassis and vanilla, and bright and spicy to the taste – Sam describes it as lush and succulent – and it is – yet still has some grip. It's spicy and peppery with concentrated black and red fruits, a hint of mint chocolate, biscuity oak and a decadently long dry, fine textured finish. Gold NZIWS.

Black red, shiny and bright with a gorgeous vanillin oak and black forest chocolate aroma, this is smooth and creamy in the mouth with a lovely savoury backbone to support the succulent red and blackcurrant fruit. A powerful wine with assertive oak, harmonious spices, plump tannins and a long, almost luscious finish.

Krohn Quinto do Retiro Novo Vintage Port 2009
Deep purple red. This aroma is spirituous and the full-bodied, mouth-coating taste is so decadently porty, luscious, smooth, harmonious and cosily warm with concentrated spiced plum and prune fruit, a hint of polished leather and cigar smoke in the background. Tantalising scent of hazels and cashews with a lovely infusion of oak spice, and toasty, creamy flavours accented with lovely savoury barrel ferment complexities, tropical fruit, nougat and allspice. There's a beautifully balanced citrus undercurrent and a seamless, harmonious flow.

Made from Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes, this light golden coloured bubbles is rich, mouth-filling and complex from the outset with a lovely foamy mousse, roasted nut and bready flavours, and blackcurrant and strawberry fruit. Delightfully fresh stylish and complete.

Grasshopper Rock Earnscleugh Vineyard Central Otago Pinot Noir 2010
Bright ruby hued, full-bodied fragrant, creamy and oaky with an intrinsic earthy savouriness and concentrated cherry and tamarillo-like fruit. There's a spicy undercurrent, a suggestion of woody herbs and a lovely lift of citrus zest on the long, harmonious finish. Classy wine.

Borsao Garnacha 2011
From the semi-arid Campo de Borga wine region in north-central Spain, this youthful, medium-bodied red has purple tints to the hue and smells and tastes of raspberry and strawberry fruit with a well balanced savoury earthy undercurrent, firm fine tannins and a touch of cedar and spice. A juicy red to enjoy with tapas.

Catena Malbec 2009 – Mendoza, Argentina
From high altitude vineyards in the Anodes foothills, this deeply coloured, fragrantly scented red is spicy and savoury tasting with a velvety texture and a deep earthy sense. Woop Woop South East Australian Shiraz 2010
A bright black red colour, this easy drinking red radiates blackcurrants and plums on the nose and is crammed with juicy Christmas cake fruits, allspice and nut chocolate in the palate. Purple red coloured with an evocative fruitcake and smoky oak scent layered with vanilla and plum and deep concentrated flavours of black fruits, dark chocolate, rose petals, camphor, cake spice, anise and a finely honed seasoning of pepper. Lovely earthy nuances balance the deep succulent fruit for a harmonious finish.

There's a burnt orange tint to the translucent tawny hue, and it’s sweet and luscious smelling with the bouquet of raisins, muscatels and orange peel carrying through to the warm, mouthcoating flavours. Hunters Marlborough Chardonnay 2010
Light gold coloured with a grapefruit-infused smoky oak bouquet, and rich creamy flavours crammed with citrus, stonefruit, toasty oak, nuts and nougat, with a zesty flourish to the long, smooth,tasty finish. Silver NZIWS and a very pleasing 'starter'.

Ashwood Gisborne Chardonnay 2010
Delicately fragrant with cashew, oatmeal and citrus aromas. Juicy tropical fruit balances the taut flinty backbone with citrus, nuts and mealy barrel ferment flavours combining in harmony with beautifully integrated French oak and a long creamy finish with depth and power. Trophy for Champion Chardonnay.

Tyrrells Single Vineyard Bedford Hunter Semillon 2004

Terra Sancta Bannockburn Central Otago Rose 2012
A deep watermelon hue, this quite delicious and juicy Rosé is vibrantly scented with wild strawberry and Black Boy peach, with cherry joining the party in the palate. Chapoutier Belleruche Cotes du Rhone Grenache Syrah 2010
This deep purple-flushed red is fragrantly perfumed with dried roses, cherries and sweet dried herb, bay leaf. A fine textured wine with just a little grip to the tannins, it has a deep rich savoury backbone, cherries, sweet spices with underlying graphite, hints of pepper and vanilla and the lovely florals of the aroma coming forth to linger on the finish.
