Fine Wine Wednesday Tasting – 30 Oct 2013
Wines with Attitude and Age
All but the last wine were tasted blind

Morton Estate IQ3 Methode Traditionelle NV
This has an enticing baking bread aroma with a hint of malt and lemon and it's complex and savoury in the palate where the bubbles are lively and refreshing. Age becomes this lovely methode that is made from predominantly Chardonnay with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier and aged on lees for at least three years – it radiates elegance and finesse.
12% alc. Screwcap. $19.99 special.

Pegasus Bay Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2010
This golden hued wine smells pungent, smoky and funky with a nuance of sewing machine oil. Wild yeast ferment characters are pronounced in the mellow, full-bodied palate. It's smoky with fleshy peach, citrus and honey and despite being Semillon dominant there is a distinctive aged Sauvignon 'canned pea' character, and the finish is crisp, savoury and dry. A fascinating wine.
13.5% alc. Screwcap. $31.99.

Penfolds Bin 08A Adelaide Hills Chardonnay 2008
Youthful light gold colour with delectable citrus and creamy barrel ferment flavours wafting from the glass and filling the palate. It still seems youthful and fresh with noticeably flinty, smoky, savoury characters adding excitement and complexity. It's the kind of wine that you will open in another 10 years and just go gaga over. A great investment.
13% alc. Screwcap. $90.99.

Waitaki Braids Waitaki Valley Pinot Noir 2008
It has a translucent and slightly bricking cherry juice hue and the bouquet is like aged strawberry jam. It's savoury and gamey with berry fruit sweetness and although the texture is fine and silky, there's a little feeling of grip to the finish. A complex food wine at this stage of its life – mushrooms are coming to mind.
13.5% alc. Screwcap. $54.99.

Castillon de Luzon Crianza 2009 – Spain
It's an inviting black red colour and it's plump and fleshy both on the nose and in the palate. Ripe, juicy and seemingly youthful with underlying savoury, gamey, leathery notes, nugget and tar and a flourish of red fruit and spice. An interesting blend of 50% Monastrell, 20% Cabernet, 20% Tempranillo and 10% Merlot.
14.5% alc. Cork. $14.99 special.

Johnny Q Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 – South Australia
Inky red black with a crimson glow. Lovely concentration of red fruit and fruit cake spices on the nose, and deliciously juicy and succulent in the palate with red and black fruit, a touch of leather, fine tannins and a velvet cream finish. Gold NZIWS 2011. Value drinking at the special price.
14.5% alc. Screwcap. $14.99 special.

d'Arenberg The Custodian McLaren Vale Grenache 2009
Dark red with just a hint of bricking. Fragrant and inviting on the nose and very ripe to the taste but beautifully savoury too. Hollick Wrattonbully Shiraz 2006
Inky black red with a succulent vanillin oak and juicy red berry scent, and fleshy and full in the palate with a sumptuous depth of flavour. Primary fruit has all but disappeared but it's the vinosity and lovely spice characters that make it a star. A wine from an outstanding year, very striking now but will continue to evolve in the cellar for quite a few years.
14.5% alc. Cork. $18.99 special.

Schild Estate Barossa Shiraz 2009
Dark red with bricking edges. Chocolate on the nose and oodles of vibrant spicy characters in the palate. Smooth with a silken chocolate texture and juicy dark berry fruit flavours, then a harmonious savoury note to the finish. Almost irresistible and ready to drink right now.

This is a completely different style. There's subtle hint of grapefruit to the smoky French oak bouquet and it tastes sophisticated and creamy with a strong mealy influence, and stonefruit and citrus in harmony. It's still young and svelte and will continue to develop beautifully. Gold NZIWS.
13.5% alc. Screwcap. $36.99.

Seifried Barrique Fermented Nelson Chardonnay 2011
It's golden in colour and the bouquet is mellow, smoky and toasty. Malo imparts a smooth buttery character and there's a malty richness underpinned by a bright citrus seam with fleshy grilled peach and a bold toasty oak finish that lasts for minutes. Light chilling only recommended.
14% alc. Screwcap. $22.99 special.

Jules Taylor Marlborough Pinot Gris 2013
Straw gold coloured with a bouquet of wind fall orchard fruit and a taste of apple strudel, it initially seems just off dry yet has a fresh acid spine and a juicy finish of mandarin and lime. Partial wild yeast and barrel aging has added texture and complexity. A perfect lunchtime wine. Gold NZIWS.
13% alc. Screwcap. $19.99 special.

Crossroads Milestone Series Hawkes Bay Gewurztraminer 2009
Medium gold with a glossy lustre to the hue, the distinctively spicy bouquet has a flower nectar infusion. It tastes luscious but doesn't taste overly sweet. There's Turkish delight, honey, candied orange peel, white pepper and a terrifically long mouthcoating finish. A very good bottle opened this time. Gold Easter Show.
13.5% alc. Screwcap. $13.99 special.

Domaine Gruss Les Roches Gewurztraminer 2011 – Alsace, France
There's an element of finesse to this bright green gold coloured wine with a bouquet that is tantalisingly spicy and floral. It has the luscious factor but also exhibits restraint. The fruit is subtle and exotic, the texture is creamy, the spiciness pops through to enliven the palate and the finish is silky and long. Classy wine.
13.5% alc. Cork. $37.99.

Chocolate Box Sparkling Barossa Shiraz 2009
Dark red with a foamy surge as the wine is poured, this has a gorgeous smoky vanillin oak-infused cherry aroma and these glorious characters carry through to the palate. It’s spicy, it’s juicy, it's fruity, it's savoury and while perhaps a little sweet for Shiraz purists, if you like this style of red bubbles, you will absolutely love this. I'm thinking of Xmas already!

Ben Schild Reserve Barossa Shiraz 2007
There's a lovely smooth mellow nature to this taste of this dark red wine that's dark red in colour with a intriguing and complex aroma. It has picked up those lovely savoury bottle aged characters while the primary fruit flavours have softened. It's very smooth and silky with mouthfilling spicy vinosity. A superb wine with a striking label embellished with a row of gold and trophy stickers. It is expensive, but it looks expensive and tastes expensive. Quite superb.

Galway Pipe Grand Tawny Port – South Australia
Deep orange mahogany in colour. The bouquet is spiritous with old barrel rancio characters inherent to this style of wine coming through and it has the luscious factor too. The texture is thick and viscous and the taste is a little nutty with heady liqueur-soaked muscatels enlivened with orange zest and spiritous spice. There's plenty to like in this sumptuous after dinner wine.

A Pinot Meunier predominant blend, it is a gold medal winner.

13.5% alc. Cork. $43.99.

Coto de Hayas Crianza 2010 – Campo de Borja, Spain
Deep crimson-edged black red. 13.5% alc. Cork. $15.99 special.

Corona D'Aragon Old Vine Garnacha 2009 – Carinena, Spain
It's a rich ruby colour with a deep black core, and smells ultra ripe, like a ripasso wine, with hints of chocolate raisins. The very ripe impression continues in the robust palate where lush fruit intertwines with savoury oak, with lots of pepper, a touch of liquorice and pillowy tannins. Very tasty and very well presented.
13.5% alc. Cork. $15.99 special.
