Marlborough alone crushed 195,000 tonnes of grapes, which is more than the total crush across the whole country in 2006. The increase is due to 2,000 hectares more of producing vines and a return to more normal yields. [Top] 25 Nov 2007: Trinity Hill Homage Syrah tops Air NZ Wine Awards Trinity Hill Homage Syrah 2006 has won the supreme Champion Wine of the Show Trophy at the 2007 Air New Zealand Wine Awards. It tops off a successful Syrah year for Trinity Hill, after its Gimblett Gravels Syrah 2006 won Champion Syrah again Australian competition at the Liquorland Top 100 two months ago and also took the accolade of Champion Red Wine. This year the Air New Zealand Wine awards presented a new trophy for wines that were grown and made in accordance with Sustainable Wine Growing New Zealand industry standards. Wines that adhered to these standard and won medals are deemed to be 'Pure'. Thus 'Pure Gold', 'Pure Silver and 'Pure Bronze' medals were awarded. The 'Pure Gold' medal winning wines then vied for the Sustainable Wine trophy and the inaugural winner was Cottage Block Hawkes bay Chardonnay 2005. However this win for Cottage Block Chardonnay should take nothing away from the overall Champion Chardonnay, the striking and impressive Sacred Hill Rifleman's Chardonnay 2006 from Hawkes Bay. Multiple Trophy winners in classes were due to trophies being awarded for Exhibition, Limited and Open categories as well. A new addition to the Show was the 'Elite Gold' (thus 'Pure Elite Gold 'for sustainable wines), to reflect 'truly great wines deserving of special recognition' amongst the gold medal winners. Thirty two of the 83 gold medal winners were crowned 'Elite'. There were also 227 silver medals and 364 bronze medals awarded. A lavish description of the Trinity Hill Homage and a list of trophy winners can be found on my Blog. Gerry Gregg, who joined Montana Wines in Marlborough as an engineer in 1976, was the inaugural recipient of the David Herd Lifetime Achievement Award presented as part of the Marlborough Wine Weekend last Saturday night. Now the National Wineries Manager for Pernod Ricard New Zealand, Mr Gregg was praised by Wine Marlborough chairman, Stuart Smith, as the 'quiet achiever'. He was also involved in setting up Marlborough Winemakers, which is now Wine Marlborough, and was part of the team that created the Marlborough Wine Festival on Montana's Brancott Estate. The festival celebrates its 25th anniversary next February. [Top] 23 Oct 2007: Vidal Syrah claims Hawkes Bay prize. An error by the Competition Director saw the wrong wine awarded the 'Champion Wine of the Show' at the recent Hawkes Bay Wine Awards. The winning wine was Vidal Reserve Syrah 2005, not Gunn Estate Skeetfield Chardonnay 2006 as previously reported. Consequently the champion wine maker is Hugh Crichton and the champion viticulturist is Oliver Powrie. "We would like apologise for this mistake. It was an administrative error and we maintain full confidence in the Awards,” says Michael Pyatt, CEO, Hawkes Bay A&P Society Inc. He says that this error bears no relationship to the withdrawal of Gunn Estate Skeetfield Chardonnay 2006 from the Awards. Yesterday Gunn Estate has withdrew their wine from the competition and returned their Trophies due to a perceived conflict of interest. Accordingly the Champion Chardonnay Trophyhas now been awarded to Sileni Estate Selection The Lodge Chardonnay 2005. [Top] 23 Oct 2007: Collards Wines closes its doors. Collards Brothers, which was established as an orchard in Henderson in 1910 and started winemaking in 1940, has announced it will sell its land in Henderson and cease winemaking. The press release says that the once-rural vineyard is now surrounded by industrial and commercial development and is no longer practical for a vineyard and winery. The land value has risen to a point that the location does not provide an economic return for the landowners. The directors have considered relocation but have decided the climate is not right to establish a new winery. The Collard brothers, Bruce and Geoff, will continue to manage the 77-hectare property at Waimauku, “Rothesay”, which is used for farming and grape growing. More info from www.collards.co.nz.
